Introduction
Hello, I am MasterDrive (SlaveDrive on Port Royale), and I would like to share some information about Crusader that I learned in the past few months. This guide will focus on Crusader's growth from level 1 to 75 while giving tips and tricks. In the past few months, I decided to start playing as a crusader but there were no guides available to start from scratch. While I did play crusader before and know a bit about it, it was a chore to find experienced players to help with EQ choice.

1. Generic explanation about the guide and general crusader information.
Crusader is the best DPS option in the mid and late game. If stealth and stun are used correctly then you will not have to worry about killing anyone. Some classes are a major annoyance and should not be taken on solo. Seal master is a good example of that. Your goal should always be to try and 1 slash someone and stun someone else. If you get away while doing that, it is even better. That is why flash bombs are pretty important to have as a Crusader(everyone should use them) in PK.

Crusader Pros:
  • Single target damage
  • Stun
  • Easy to level up in mid to late game
  • DPS for days
  • Useful for chesting in mazes
  • High risk - high reward playstyle
Crusader Con's:
  • Very, very expensive. 2 swords need to be gemmed. Also, gems used are always expensive (UG rage is around 20m on PR, Sharpshooters main gem UG striking is only 4m) I paid a similar amount to gem my sword to level 2 as my friend paid to gem to level 5 striking.
  • Dies easily without pots and stealth to all other classes.
  • Difficult to be good at because it requires good spatial awareness and timing. You can't go YOLO on a Crusader and expect to win.

1.1 Hexathlon
If there is a Hexathlon going on, then use it if you can. This does greatly reduce the time especially until level 60. Afterward, it is viable (not a lot of exp earned) but can be annoying because of the amount of cash that you have to pay for candies and time spent foraging, it is better to spend the time grinding. It is basically free and will give you the same amount of exp in the end. Therefore, saving you a lot of money. It is, after all, 100k to 150k for each run. It does not sound as much but if you can manage to do 11-12 runs for each 30min session it can be draining if it is your first character in PKO. If not or you have saved a lot of cash, then you should do it. It is smarter to spend those few millions to get a CA set instead of buying candies.

1.2 Builds
1.2.1 AGI Crusader

AGI crusader as the name implies puts everything into AGI. After 100 AGI is reached then you start putting points into STR. The guide below provides far more in-depth information on AGI crusaders than I ever could:
https://piratekings.online/threads/lvling-100-agi-crusader-guide.6219/

Pros:
  • High dodge (very difficult to kill with physical damage)
  • High Attack Speed
  • Good for chesting

Con’s:
  • Damage without gems and STR pet is low.
  • Vulnerable to other classes because slashing someone in 1 go is impossible without gems and STR pet.
  • Low hit rate

1.2.2 Slasher build – Most used build
A slasher build is made to get to the 210 attack speed to get the passive Illusion slash (IS) buff. At 140(100%) and 210(50%) attack speed you get an increase in your IS damage. You start by adding all points to AGI so you get to the 210 attack speed and then put all leftover points into STR. Rebirth is pretty important for this build because at level 41 you will need around 60 AGI to get to 210 attack speed but at level 75 you will only need around 35 AGI; all the AGI in the EQ makes it significantly lower. If you do not want to use up a lot of rum for AGI resets then it is better to do rebirth.

Pros:
  • Good damage
  • IS damage makes it possible to 1 slash people

Con’s:
  • Low hit rate
  • Difficult to level up in the early stages.

1.2.3 STR Crusader
A build I have never personally used but it can deal some cool damage. Your goal is to put everything into STR and then switch to AGI. With an AGI pet, it can deal nice damage, but you will not get the IS buff without a pet. For this reason, it is recommended to get an AGI pet instead of an STR pet. If you are going for leveling only you could do with only “Blood Frenzy” and “Berserker” skills and use STR pet instead.

Pros:
  • Very good damage
  • If paired with an AGI pet, you can do a lot of IS damage because it is based on auto-attack damage.
Con’s:
  • Heavy pot usage. After all, you have almost no dodge without an AGI pet.
  • Very slow attack speed without buffs, pots, and pet.
  • Low hit rate and dodge

1.3 Skills
Skills for a crusader are very dependent on your own playstyle. Personally, I do not care about IS as much at early levels as “Sword Mastery”. It helps a lot with auto-attack damage which you are using 90% of the time so it makes little sense to rush leveling IS to level 10. Berserker is a must. It must be at least level 5 on level 41 to unlock the “Dual sword mastery” skill.

At level 41 you need to make a choice. It is either leveling “Dual sword mastery” to level 10 or the “Blood Frenzy” skill. Personally, I think leveling “Blood frenzy” makes more sense because at level 45 you can fuse “Blade of Incantation” with fork weapon apparel to get the max level on “Dual sword mastery”. The fork must be fused to the off-hand sword.

Swordsman:
Concentration: Level 2
Sword mastery: Level 3
Berserker: Level 5
Illusion Slash: MAX

Crusader:
Dual Sword Mastery: Level 2
Blood Frenzy: MAX

2. Pets
Every build should get an STR pet. An STR crusader can choose to go with an AGI pet first to get the IS damage bonus on early levels(<70). Always prepare yourself that you will need to get an AGI pet at some point. Leveling in ABBA is almost impossible without an AGI pet. You need that extra dodge in ABBA.

If you know you are going to level up solo to level 80 or higher, you might think about getting a Fairy of Evil first instead of a Fairy of Strength. In ABBA 3 it will not matter because you will need to use a Fairy of agility to level up.

3. Leveling
For leveling, I have decided to use the places that “Sminatin” posted because they are good places to level up. The are some minor changes because they are easier to reach when you just started out. You can find his post here:

4. EQ
4.1 Until level 55

Use chest EQ until level 55. Then switch to the Evanescence unseals (around 5m for the whole set) or Chaos Argent set (around 12m for the whole set). Dance of Evanescence is a must at level 55. Do remember to fuse it with Fork apparel for that free max “Dual sword mastery”. If you do not have money use chest EQ until level 65(swords included).

4.2 Level 65
It is now time to switch to Blade of Enigma. If you have CA set, then you do not need to switch EQ. If, however, you have the Evanescence set you will need to find the Enigma set and try to buy level 70 Hermes framestone and Clawstone. Buying a CA set for 5 levels is useless. You will need to buy a CA paw eventually for the extra movement speed in PKs.

4.3 Level 70
At level 70 you need to switch to the Hermes Framestone and Hermes Clawstone. Hermes clawstone is the best overall choice because of the hit rate it provides.

4.4 Level 75+
The black dragon set is in my opinion the best option on level 75. I would recommend sticking with Hermes Clawstone though because of the pure hit rate you get from it. Also, you can use Boots of Secret for the dodge bonus. In PK you will need to use either CA paw or BD wing. Speed is far more important than being able to dodge. Most people do not really attack with auto-attacks, they either use skills and run or stun you so being able to IS, stun, and run back is far more important than getting more dodge. Sharpshooters are the sole exception to this rule but that is why we have “Stealth” …

STR Darkness Emissary is the most favored weapon choice. If you are full STR crus you could go for the AGI one, but STR one is generally speaking, just better.

4.5 Accessories
Use level 65 STR/AGI rings; the ring is called Ysidor. Otherwise, try to get a level 60 ring called Peter's Call. If you can get your hands on Ancient Illusion then use it. Otherwise, just go for the HP movement speed necklace(Soul generator). Prior to that use what is easiest to get for you. If you are a maller you can try getting the ring and necklace voucher and hope for the best.

4.5 Gems
4.5.1 Gloves

Lustrous gems and Striking gems. You can think of switching striking gems to BD heart, but it is not recommended. The hit rate is too important for a Crusader.

4.5.2 Armor
Initially, Shining and Colossus gems then switch Shining to BD Soul. Extra PR is far more useful than the 500 hp you get from the level 5 Shining gem.

4.5.3 Boots
Shadow and Wind gems all the way. Just like with gloves you could think about switching to BD heart. It should replace Shadow gems.

4.5.4 Swords
Lustrous and Rage gems. Switching Rage to BD Eye could be good but, in most cases, you get more dmg out of 1 level of rage than BD eye so switching Lustrous gems with BD eye in the late game is smarter. Remember that you must have lustrous gems somewhere, be it in gloves, or one of the swords. There is no point in having a lot of damage if you cannot deal that damage. The hit rate is very important to a crusader.

4.5.5 BD Gems
All in all, do not switch to BD gems in all EQ. You must maintain balance with hit rate and dodge. Sometimes, it is not recommended to switch to BD gems at all. What is the point of having 4k dmg when you are unable to hit anyone?

My personal take is that I try to keep the balance of a 300 hit rate and dodge while investing in other gems. That is enough to kill most mobs.

5. Goals
It is always good to have a list of goals in mind when playing any class, so I decided to provide the goals I have been using for the past few months.
  • 500 base min attack at level 55
  • 750 base min attack at level 65
  • 1k base damage at level 70
  • 1.4k base damage at level 75
  • 2k base damage at level 80
  • 2.3k damage at level 75 (Poss, pots, and buff)
  • 3.3k damage at level 80 (Poss, pots, and buff)
  • 4k HP at level 75
  • FoS and FoA at level 41 before level 80
  • FoE 41 at level 55
  • Chaos Set at level 55.
  • Hermes Framestone and Clawstone on level 70.
  • Darkness Emissary on level 80

6. PK
As a crusader in a PK, it is your job to find vulnerable targets. You use stealth while avoiding groups of people to find easy picks. Always have flash bombs on you and always go in fully potted. Without pots, you will die a lot. While in Chaos Argent it is not a big deal in some instances like in Black Dragon lair it is very important to be at your best, so you do not have to rerun.

6.1 Classes to avoid or to focus
Avoid those classes:

  • Seal Master (protection skill will take IS dmg and you just revealed yourself so others can one-shot you. They can also seal you which is almost equal to instant death in PKs)
  • Cleric (protection skill will take IS dmg and you just revealed yourself so others can one-shot you)
  • Voyager (if higher level than you or a CON Voyager)
  • Champions
Focus those classes:
  • Sharpshooter (beware of CON Sharpshooters. They can survive the initial attack so if you do not time it well, you are dead.)
  • Other Crusaders when they come out of stealth.
  • SPR voyagers (on a similar level to SPR Voyager, a crusader should be able to 1 slash him/her)
You can try taking on CON Voyager but remember that having Flash bombs and Grenades is important to kill them. If even one conch lands you are most likely dead. If you have a blessed potion, you can use it to avoid the damage and kill them.

6.2 Single target tactic
Always use Flash bomb first than IS while counting to 3 and lastly use stun. Now if the target is not dead you are close enough to start using autos while they are still stunned. Calculate how long you stun a target for. You can find the duration in the skills description and calculate it based on level. It is important to know the duration, so you have time to run back if you did not manage to kill the target. If you have 2 seconds left and you can see that it is impossible to kill the target just run and use stealth again.

6.3 Bigger PK tactic
This is a good tactic if you play versus isolated targets. The problem starts when you are in bigger PKs. A flash bomb will not stun them all so your best bet is to stay back or to flank them to get access to the backline. It does work fine if you are in Chaos argent or BD lair but can be difficult in DW (running around takes too long in most cases) or CA when BD mobs spawn. You will get revealed by the mobs, so it is impossible to flank if mobs are not cleared which they are not because the focus is on PK and not on farming. Your best bet is to stay back in stealth and allow the enemy to walk into you.

7. General Crusader tips
7.1 Cooking

Start early with farming Withered roots and Pumpkin Heads; store them in the bank between levels 42 to 55. Those will come in handy when you start cooking steam buns. Which you will at some point because pots are very expensive and if you want to go to PK you will need them. Farming sealed blueprints at Angels level 55 are also a good way of starting your career as a chef. I use around 4 million worth of pots at every CA I am at. Oyster(65k) + Rolls(110k) + Blessed(400k) = 575k at almost each run and you can do quite a lot of them in each CA. A friendly sharpshooter spent 8m in 1 CA. Start farming SBPS as soon as you can level at Guardian Angels. You can start by making steam buns and selling them for money to get better EQ. Getting 4 stacks of withered roots at Treants in 30 minutes is pretty easy (the easy way is to just level a voyager to level 55 and start farming there much faster). Pumpkin Heads are a bit slower to farm but drop quite well as well. Always use a buffer when farming. That extra movement and attack speed helps a lot when farming.

Your next step should be to get a steady income of Oyster and Sturgeon soups. Both are easy to farm but oyster needs a bit of a higher level char and initial investment because you need to buy Liquorice from Grocery for 10k each. Discard blueprints with more than 6 liquorice on them, you will never break even on those. If you sell more you can go for 10 max. Personally, I use a split of 30% to 70%. I keep 30% for PKs while selling 70%.

7.2 Gems vs Levels
Leveling is a better way of getting more damage than gemming your EQ.

A. When you are 10 or more levels behind someone you barely damage him. I do not remember the exact table but it was around 10%(auto-attack damage) per level reduced damage if you are lower level than the target. In this case, always go for similar level people. You can kill a level 85 sharpshooter or crusader on the level 75 but the chances are very low or they are already low.

B. UG Rage gems cost a lot while you could buy a High-amp go to Mirage and level at a rate of 20% in 30 minutes at level 72. So for 5 high amps(150 minutes needed to level up) which are 3.5m in total and nana's for 2m(10 nana's) in total (5.5m in total for both amps), you could potentially deal far more damage just by getting 1 level. 10% + the extra stats and skill points make a huge difference; far bigger than 1 UG rage ever could. At level 74 I could barely do 800 IS damage to CryLoud while at 75 I suddenly got a spike to 1.6k because I came into that 10 level difference window. Even on best pots and poss, I can barely do 2.3/2.4 IS dmg to a level 85 crusader because of that system.

C. Do not ignore gems but do keep leveling above them because the damage increase per level is far higher than UG Rage, especially in the high-level PKs where it matters the most.

Please comment if there are things I should edit. After all, I have only been playing a crusader for few months so there are many things I do not know about the class.

It depends on what you are doing. If you PK, other skills take precedence, like stealth. I went for blood frenzy instead because it made more sense considering my goal was to level up, not PK. Also, at a certain point in time, my opinion is that everyone should make their own choices that fit their playstyle best. I consider level 45 an excellent starting point for that.

I really like the No. 5 Goal. Everyone should set a goal before going up on level. Thanks for this. almost 3 years now and this guide still helpful. works on all classes.
